On November 9th, the Saturday of Veterans Day weekend, the Jarvis Conservatory in Napa will host “Soldier's Journey,” a benefit presentation celebrating the history of, and giving voice to, veterans of military service.
Renowned director and singer, Richard Harrell, and Jarvis music director, Frank Johnson, have teamed up to prepare a program of music and poetry which will explore perspectives of service, dedication and sacrifice, soldiers' and family experience during war and peacetime. Singers and actors from around the Bay Area and Napa will offer familiar songs, classic and new poems and readings to inspire and to encourage appreciation and support.
Many of the poems have been written by veterans for a National Veterans Poetry Contest, sponsored over the years by Heroes' Voices, a service organization. This not-for-profit helps veterans build confidence and community by connecting them with the power of music and poetry.
Headquartered in San Francisco, Heroes' Voices sponsors free workshops and music study, where veterans build skills in guitar, writing and self- expression, raising their voices together. The organization, over its ten year history, has developed partnerships with many other veterans' service organizations and university veterans programs, has sponsored research on music and Post Traumatic Stress Disorders, and has served thousands of veterans in the Bay Area and throughout America. Proceeds from this concert will support the ongoing work and programs of Heroes' Voices.
