Live Event:
THE FOUR LOST SANTAS / AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS
On Saturday December 14, Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento will bring a wonderful holiday entertainment to Napa, a pair of short operas specially composed for the season, perfect for families, and for music and theater lovers of all ages. Afternoon and evening performances will be offered.
Amahl and the Night Visitors, by one of America's most renowned, award-winning composers, was originally commissioned for NBC Television. From its December 1951 premiere, it became a Christmastime tradition for many years, rebroadcast and revived in new production. The work became a favorite in live performances around the world. Gian-Carlo Menotti wrote the text and music, telling the story of a poor shepherd boy in the Holy Land, Amahl, as he and his mother provide hospitality to unexpected, fabulous visitors -- Three Wise Men, kings following a glorious star. It is a transformative visit, full of warmth and humor, with beautiful music.
A brand new work, in its West Coast premiere, will open the performance. Four Lost Santas, commissioned by Orlando Opera, tells the comic story of a quartet on their journey to a Santa Claus Convention, their car breakdown, and a mother and son hurrying on their way to perform in Amahl. The music is by Spicer Carr, with the libretto by Rose Freeman and Carr.
Stage director for both operas will be Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento Artistic Director Robert Vann, a leading Bay Area tenor (and who, incidentally, appeared in June with other wonderful Sacramento singers on Jarvis' IAGNFS series). Anne-Marie Endres will conduct the cast and orchestra. LOTS has a 42 year history, directed by founders Debbie and Mike Baad, established as the Sacramento Valley's premier theater company offering the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, light operas and other musical fare.
Performances of this delightful pair of short operas will be at 2:00 pm and at 7:00 pm, on Saturday December 14. Special ticket prices are available for children and young adults, for seniors and for groups. Plan now to attend and brighten your holidays, and bring friends and family.
